About Paul on Politics

Welcome to my Substack!

I’m a journalist with a career that spans over four decades, beginning in the vibrant newsrooms of North London in the 1980s. My first years as a reporter found me in one of the most politically charged patches in the country, covering stories in the constituency of then-Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. Those early experiences shaped my understanding of the importance of politics at both the grassroots and national levels.

During a 30-year stint as the political editor for the Kent Messenger Group, I collected several awards. I was also involved as a presenter for KMTV, an innovative TV political chat show in collaboration with the University of Kent’s Centre for Journalism.

Now, as a freelance journalist, I’m excited to bring my voice to this new platform.

Here, I’ll share my reflections on the latest political developments, the stories behind the headlines, and insights drawn from my years on the frontline of political reporting.

I’ll also be casting my net wider to explore the key political issues at a national level—this won’t be a blog regurgitating stories about Kent.

Whether you’re a fellow journalist, a political enthusiast, or simply curious about the inner workings of the news, I hope you’ll find my Substack a compelling and informative read.
